Divine Mercy Sunday
The devotion to the Divine Mercy comes from the mystical visions of the Polish Saint, Faustina Kowalska. In 1931, Jesus appeared to her.
Then, through a series of apparitions, He spoke with her and taught her. She recorded His teachings in what has become known as the Diary of Saint Faustina. From Our Lord Himself, through the Diary come the gifts of:
1. The Divine Mercy Chaplet
2. The Feast of Divine Mercy itself, and
3. The Image of the Divine Mercy.
Our Lord asked Saint Faustina to have the image painted, asking her that the words "Jesus, I Trust in You" be written on it.
Pope John Paul II very intentionally gave us Saint Faustina as the first Saint to be canonized in the 3rd Millennium. At her canonization ceremony, he established the Sunday after Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday, as per the request of Our Lord.
